MESSAGE FROM THE PPLC ADMINISTRATOR
Dear
Readers,
Thank
you for your efforts on behalf of the Talking Book Library Services. Your
letters and calls made an impression on the members of our legislative
delegation.
The
Cooperative has received word that we will have fewer dollars from State Aid
this year so we will have to make some adjustments to next year’s budget. We
will be able to continue all of the public services now provided by fine-tuning
some areas. At PTBL we are fortunate that most of our equipment is fairly new
and up-to-date. Everything wears out eventually but for the next year we seem in
good shape.
One
of the reasons we are able to maintain a high level of services is due to our
cadre of great volunteers. We are limited in staff numbers so the volume of
nitty-gritty but necessary tasks falls to these good and dependable people.
Thanks
again – and stay tuned in as the legislature makes decisions affecting all of
us.
Bernadette
Storck, PPLC Administrator

SPOTLIGHT
ON VOLUNTEERS
ERNIE
GRUNZ
One of our most
dedicated volunteers is Ernie Grunz. He’s
lived in Florida since his retirement from the National Park Service in Atlanta
11 years ago. Ernie has volunteered
at the Pinellas Talking Book Library for two years.
He comes in on Monday afternoons to sort books, then he comes back to
PTBL on Wednesday mornings to inspect and rewind books!
Ernie stays busy volunteering around town; you can
find him at the Largo Public Library two days a week shelving videos (he’s
been doing that for 10 years!). When Ernie isn’t generously donating his time
to a library, he’s either listening to his extensive record collection (over
300 records!) of Big Band music OR he’s in the baseball diamond as Second
Baseman for the St. Petersburg Kids & Kubs.
He’s been on this team since November of last year.
Prior to that he spent 9 years with the Three Score League, also playing
second base.
Ernie’s volunteer
resume is quite extensive; he’s volunteered with the Red Cross in their
business office and he delivered books to homebound county residents for Clearwater Library, among other things.
PTBL is glad to have Ernie on our team!
RESOURCE
SHARING: or WHY DID I GET A BOOK FROM FT. LAURDERDALE?
Have you recently received books from
other libraries in Florida and wondered why they are sending books to you? This
is the result of a new book sharing agreement among the talking book libraries
in Florida. Several years ago the Regional Library in Daytona, the PTBL, and
subsequently the other subregionals have changed to a new computer system that
allows us to share resources.
The
procedure works like this: First the computer checks to see if we have available
the books on your request list. Then it checks the Regional Library’s
inventory. If none on hand, the computer next checks the copies available at the
other 12 subregional libraries throughout Florida. This sharing of resources
will help talking book recipients get the books they want to read in a timely
manner.
Of
course the newest books by authors such as Danielle Steel and John Grisham will
still be in great demand and not available. But take heart! Overall, more copies
of the books you like best are now accessible to PTBL patrons.
The PTBL will be closed the following days for holidays:
Friday
March 29
Spring Holiday
Monday
May 27
Memorial Day
Thursday
July 4
Independence Day
For books about these or other holidays, please call your Reader Advisor.
