READING RECOMMENDATIONS

The following is a selection of titles available in both the talking book format and on descriptive video. So, if you’re in the mood to read a book and then watch the movie adaptation of it, this list is a good place to start!

Watch and Read!

A Farewell to Arms. Ernest Hemingway. DV010234 (Descriptive video) / RC049506 (book)

Feature Film. Starring Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes. This sweeping drama, played out against the brutal backdrop of the First World War, tells the unforgettable story of a handsome American ambulance corpsman who falls in love with a English nurse. When he is wounded she nurses him back to health. Adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's famous novel.

A Beautiful Mind . Sylvia Nasar. DV010274 (descriptive video) / RC047595 (book)

The life of a mathematical genius who contributed to game theory, computer architecture, the study of the universe, and the mystery of prime numbers—all before the age of thirty. Then schizophrenia enveloped his mind and he spent thirty more years in and out of mental hospitals before a spontaneous recovery returned him to the world of research. Movie is directed by Ron Howard and stars Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly.

Bridget Jones’s Diary . Helen Fielding. DV011588 (descriptive video) / RC046267 (book)

Despite a long list of resolutions, British Bridget Jones's year gets off to "an exceptionally bad start" when her parents try to fix up their thirtyish dateless daughter with their friends' unappealing divorced son. But all is not lost--it appears that Bridget's crush on her boss is developing into a two-sided flirtation. Strong language. Bestseller.

Cyrano de Bergerac. Edmond Rostand. DV010235 (descriptive video) / RC023102 (book)

Feature Film. Starring Jose Ferrer. Few men cut as wide a swath through Paris in the 1760's as a poet whose remarkable nose is exceeded only by his reputation as a duelist. The poet is persuaded to help a fellow guardsman woo Roxanne, the beauty he adores but fears to approach. Will Roxanne realize the man whose words touch her heart is really the poet? Edmond Rostand's classic.
