Long-Term Care Diversion Program
Looking for an alternative to nursing home care?
A long-term diversion plan may be the answer.
Jackie Garvey, Provider Relations Specialist, American Eldercare, spoke at the Friends of the Pinellas Talking Book Library meeting, August 23, 2004 about the Long Term Care Diversion program. The goal of the program is to assist older adults so they can stay in their own homes as an alternative to nursing home placement. “The happier you are, the healthier you are,” said Garvey, who added, “We are shifting more Medicaid money to community programs so we won’t need to put people in nursing homes when they really don’t need or want that kind of expensive care.”
A care manager will determine program eligibility and work with the individual or family to design a plan of care to meet the individual’s needs. To start the process, call the Florida Department of Elder Affairs for an assessment to verify eligibility requirements. There are many levels of eligibility for the Diversion program and patients must meet specific criteria for eligibility including being 65 years or older and having Medicare Parts A&B. In Pinellas County, call 727-588-6882 for more information.
